When you first walked through the doors of Elk Grove High School as a freshman, how did you find out about clubs, sports, and activities?
Most times you might have found out about them through a friend or because you talked to one of the coaches. But this isn’t the most ideal way of getting people involved in high school. There’s one great way that clubs and activities can advertise themselves better, and that’s through the use of hallway posters.
The posters that you might see plastered in the halls are the best reminder for many students to find out about joining a club. There is a great chance that there is a club out there for you that you have never heard about yet. This is primarily because the main place you could even find clubs is the school website. While the school website is reliable for the information about clubs, how many students are even visiting the school website every day?
Here’s an example. If you are looking for a way to communicate your ideas or have a passion for expressing yourself, there are a multitude of clubs that do this. There’s newspaper, speech team, multimedia, and so on. There’s a chance you don’t quite how to get involved with these clubs, or that they even existed. If these clubs hung up more posters around the school, it could spread the word about them while bringing in more participants.
Other students at Elk Grove have a similar experience with trying to find clubs and activities that suit them.
Clare Duffy, a senior involved in tech crew, speech and band, said that she found out about these clubs through participating in other activities.
“One of my teachers told me about tech, and that let me find speech,” Duffy said.
While clubs do not have a guaranteed way of getting people to join, they should hang up posters to let students know when the first meeting is. That is the problem that posters will solve. It gives kids an easier way to find out more about an activity they would enjoy. Right now, the only way to find that information is to talk to someone on the inside (coach or student) which is a more difficult way to do it.
Announcements are a way that people find out about these activities aren’t even that reliable in the first place. However, there hasn’t been a single time where I was clearly able to hear everything on the announcements as they’re read live. They are once a day, and if you miss them, you miss them.
Duffy added that clubs should advertise themselves more around school and make themselves known.
“I think that so many of these clubs are beneficial, and if people knew about them and their benefits then more people would join them,” Duffy said.
