Temple Run 2 has better graphics than the first game, including ropes from which the characters can hang and grab coins and a level inside a mine.
Since Imangi Studios released the popular app, Temple Run, in August 2011, a whole slew of Temple Run wannabee apps have surfaced in the App Store, such as One Epic Knight, Subway Surfers and Zombies Chasing.
But Temple Run fanatics now have a new app to keep them hooked on their high-tech gadgets: Temple Run 2.
Released on Jan. 17, this new app is surprisingly similar to its predecessor. The gameplay is still the same: players dodge obstacles, tilt to collect coins while running from what is, in this case, one giant monster. Players can still use their coins to purchase upgrades for their character and game.
There are new elements to the game, however. Guy Dangerous has been given a new temple to explore and it’s filled with new obstacles and daring heights. Players will need to avoid spinning spikes in the ground, jump on ziplines, avoid gaps and even tilt their way through minecart segments.
The game has also been given a visual update. Characters look better and the environment is much more detailed with eye-popping colors. Combine that with more upgrades, achievements tied to a leveling system and a new gem currency that players can use to revive themselves whenever they die, it still is only slightly better than the original Temple Run. Overall, it’s mainly an aesthetic upgrade.
The biggest disappointment is how safe Imangi Studios decided to play it with their sequel. There are no buzz-worthy changes. There is no real excitement. Nothing that will blow your mind. They could have tried something better, but it can only be described as “a bit better” than Temple Run.
Right now Temple Run 2 is only available on Apple devices. Imangi Studios is looking to put out an Android version by the end of January.
If you loved the original Temple Run, you will love its sequel even more. Still, it doesn’t bring enough to the table to distinguish itself from the sea of competing apps. Temple Run 2 is essentially a clone of the original.
